End the use of aversives, restraints and seclusion
End the use of aversives, restraints and seclusion on children on the autism spectrum by alerting the media, school teachers, parents, and the general public about the dangers and inhumanity of these pratices.
A report issued in January 2009 by the National Disability Rights found that 32 states have rules or laws that refer to the use of restraint and isolation, but these policies are "either unclear or inadequate." Instead of aversive practices, offer pro-active strategies such as positive behavior supports as the solution. The Parent's Guide to Protecting Your Child From the Use of Restraint, Aversive Interventions, and Seclusion from bridge4kids describes a number of such pro-active, positive solutions; explains the rights of parents and students; includes a "no consent form"; and debunks the "myth of safe restraint."
This is an ongoing pledge that should be fulfilled as often as possible.

I have a 91/2 year old ASD son who is being forced into a private placement by his SD. The private placement has 60% psychotic students 40% autism--and they openly use these tactics. I live in northern California.

My son has been abused, restrained, placed in seclusion, had lemon sprayed in his face, and medicated for years by so called professional teaching staff. We had to remove him from multiple "schools" for his own safety. He now suffers from PTSD at least now he's home-schooled and safe, but the damage has been done. No justice or relief for him will be coming. He's non-verbal and schools are above the law.

There is no excuse for anyone to do this to anyone..espeically a disabled person..its sad to think that there are people in this world that think that is an ok thing to do.

Parents must stop listening to poorly educated "experts" and protect kids. We all need to stop allowing any harsh treatment children. Society needs a positive outcome in the adult child. Our public schools only use cheap tactics and plug kids into a one size fits program. All children deserve to be treated humanely. Stop harsh senseless practices that damage everyone ~ even the kids that witness it.

There is no excuse to do this to a disabled person. There no reason to let this happen. These kids need our help and support. They deserve so much better than this!

My son can't tell me about his day - I may never really know if he is safe or not when I'm not with him. It is essential that he be protected.
John W. Knapp Lincoln, NE @ 07:08PM PT Mar 12
People with autism are human beings. Like Judi Robinson-Pierce said, we auties are already restrained by our disorder. We deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.

All babies are a miracle and should be treated as such.
Judi Robinson-Pi... @ 06:05AM PT Feb 17
Autistic children are already secluded & restrained due to the nature of this disorder called AUTISM.
End the use of aversives, restraints and seclusion and treat these children with the respect and dignity they so deserve.
Gil-Ann Wilder @ 05:53AM PT Feb 17
All of us on God's earth should be treated equally 'no matter what'. We all are different and we should all be treated with dignity and respect! God bless these children and their parents. They are SPECIAL.
