Monday Autism News Potpourri

a bowl of random assorted items; recognizable: rubber band ball, spiderman head, large white flower, small white flower, shells, pine conePeople Edition! (It just sorta worked out that way this week...)

1. Steven Drake of Not Dead Yet (and regular, appreciated commenter here) has a podcast up on AuTube. This month's AuTube topic is "how does being on the spectrum shape personal relationships?"--includes expert footage from Steven Shore.

2. Ari Ne'eman has an essay on history, advocacy, taking control of our lives, and other related topics up at the AAPD Interns blog. Recommended action after reading: follow the whole multi-author blogstream! I think this may be my new favorite blog site (must take care not to get lost there for hours instead of doing other work...)

3. Amy Roloff from the TV show Little People, Big World did an interview wherein she discusses topics surrounding acceptance, communication, and empowerment. Positive and pragmatic, and more than just a little familiar (to me).

4. Derek Paravicini, a blind, autistic, musical prodigy is currently touring. Many clips, facts, and links about Paravicini at Irked.

5. Donna Williams, also via Irked, contributes SKYPE INTERVIEW! Donna Williams hangs out with Craig Evans of Autism Hangout. Includes video!

I wish #1 hadn't been a phone interview-- I have such a hard time understanding people's voices over the phone due to the distortion of the higher frequencies. Though I'm glad that the latest AuTube video is captioned!

And #5, I have trouble hearing because of the acoustics-- computer speakers going into a microphone, rather than a direct audio feed, cause quite a bit of reverb.

Anyone interested in transcribing either of those?

Actually, the same goes for the Stephen Shore interview on the latest AuTube page, too - it's audio-only, and also a phone recording. I'm interested, but it just takes too much focus for me to understand speech over the phone.

I wish I had time to transcribe these--I find transcription weirdly relaxing (not that that helps you any).

Heh, it's funny-- I quite enjoy transcribing when the audio's clear enough for me to make out with my auditory processing quirks. It's just that the frequency cutoff on the phone doesn't play well with said quirks.
