Need School Placement, Move the House
Published May 03, 2009 @ 03:57PM PT

Now that we've made it through another year's IEP, I've been recalling IEP meetings and school placements (and strained discussions over these) of years past. I've mentioned time and time again about us moving several times in search of a school district with the right kind of program for Charlie. Just living one town over here in New Jersey can make a significant difference for Charlie's education and, accordingly, his future.
Moving's never fun or easy as it involves a huge transition, not to mention packing, for all. So what about this for a solution: Rather than packing up one's worldly possessions to move and get a child into a school district with an appropriate program, how about just moving the house? (Here's a house small enough to go on the road; it's 7 x 18 feet and has a "kitchen, a seating area, a (fold-down) table for eating, a (walk-in closet) bathroom and a sleeping loft," and also a fireplace, as noted on yesterday's SFGate). Of course, one still has to find a piece of real estate to put the house on........
Seriously, sometimes you just have to move to find the right program. Yesterday's TC Palm reports on a family who moved from Trinidad to Florida so that their son could attend an autism school and a column in the Halifax New Net describes a family who moved far away west across Canada in pursuit of this.
Moving is never easy for anyone; not easy for an individual like my son who relies on a great deal of routine and order in his world. So I suppose a house that could move with you could be considered to have some advantages, though no way 7 x 18 feet would ever be enough space for my son (let alone, to be honest, his parents).

Very cleverly put! It does seem as if we almost need houses on wheels for families of special needs kids so that they can just roll around from one location to another according to what is needed at any given time!

Maybe an RV? There are plenty of RV parks down here in Florida. ;)
